The "hole" truth.

Hole size in a colander is very important. Large holes allow water to escape quickly, but also make it easy for food to squeeze out. Small holes keep the food in, but create a slow drain of water which means the food continues to over cook in hot water. In our design tests, the best performing designs used mesh style materials with tiny holes 2 to 3 mm large. The HOLM colander has 2.3mm holes to give it a good balance between water flow, food retention, and strength. The mesh doesn't bend even when filled with large fruit.
 

The right design.

I know what you are thinking - a colander is just a bowl with holes. What's the big deal? Most of us suffer with a lousy colander that we bought at one time or another. Ones with holes that are so big that pasta falls through right into the sink. Or ones that drain too slowly and ruin food. Or ones that have a base that blocks the drain so that water washes back into your freshly cooked pasta. Or that are a huge pain to wash or that are a little too small. At HOLM we designed our colander to be the last colander you'll ever buy. It handles pasta, fruit, vegetables, your kitchen cabinets, and your dishwasher like a champ.

 

Reliably Sturdy.

When designing our colander, we experimented with different materials; ceramics, plastics, and stainless steel. We also tried several different shapes, including some innovative collapsible versions. In the end, we found that the best material was one we trusted: Stainless steal. The best, most reliable performing shape, was the traditional bowl shape. Our design innovation wasn't in reinventing what already worked well, but in making the best quality colander possible. The HOLM colander looks pretty and does the job. Sturdy handles wont get hot easily when draining hot foods, and make it easy to lower the loaded colander into a sink (even when wearing cooking mitts!)
